2010 Cadillac SRX 3.0 AWD Performance Review – Autochannel (press release)

DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD
WITH CAREY RUSS

2010 Cadillac SRX 3.0 AWD Performance

The second generation of Cadillac’s SRX luxury crossover is here. Or should that be “second iteration”? For while it is still Cadillac’s entry in the mid-sized luxury crossover class, the 2010 SRX shares nothing but its name with the vehicle that debuted back in model year 2004.

Surprisingly, it’s a smaller, less-expensive vehicle.

Or maybe that’s not so surprising, given the volatility in fuel prices, changes in government fuel economy standards, concern over greenhouse gas emissions, and economic turmoil that seems to pass for early 21st Century reality.

Don’t think that “smaller and less-expensive” is synonymous with the pejorative “cheaper” here. Cadillac made that mistake once, long ago, and isn’t about to do that again. And parent General Motors is in no position allow, or even tolerate that, either. The 2010 SRX is a true Cadillac, and offers distinctive styling, good performance and fuel economy, and fine road manners that allow it to compete with the best from Japan, Germany, and the U.S.A.

Look Ma…No Wires with Apple’s IPhone 3.0 Software Update

So everyone who has an iPhone I’m sure knows by now that Apple has released the iPhone 3.0 today. But you don’t really talk about the iPhone you say, you’re more headphones. True, but with this new update which includes support for for Bluetooth’s Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), it means you can now stream your music to wireless headphones via Bluetooth!

This lets you stream stereo audio over Bluetooth to other devices, such as wireless headphones, a speaker system, or a car stereo. Pairing an iPhone 3G with an A2DP speaker system and a set of A2DP headphones is simple, and the devices stay paired even when the phone goes in and out of range. However, you have to control volume on the audio device; the iPhone’s volume buttons are disabled when streaming audio over Bluetooth.

Japanese Gadget Controls iPod in Blink of an Eye

A wink, a smile or a raised eyebrow could soon change the music on your iPod or start up the washing machine, thanks to a new Japanese gadget.

The device looks like a normal set of headphones but is fitted with a set of infrared sensors that measure tiny movements inside the ear that result from different facial expressions. The gizmo – called the “Mimi Switch” or “Ear Switch” — is connected to a micro-computer that can control electronic devices, essentially making it a hands-free remote control for anything.

“You will be able to turn on room lights or swing your washing machine into action with a quick twitch of your mouth,” said its inventor, Kazuhiro Taniguchi of Osaka University.

“An iPod can start or stop music when the wearer sticks his tongue out, like in the famous Einstein picture. If he opens his eyes wide, the machine skips to the next tune. A wink with the right eye makes it go back.

“The machine can be programmed to run with various other facial expressions, such as a wriggle of the nose or a smile.”

The Mimi Switch could also store and interpret data and get to know its user, said Taniguchi, chief researcher at Osaka University’s Graduate School of Engineering Science in western Japan.

“It monitors natural movements of the face in everyday life and accumulates data,” Taniguchi told AFP in an interview. “If it judges that you aren’t smiling enough, it may play a cheerful song.”

Some may use the device for relaxation – perhaps by changing music hands-free while reading a book – but Taniguchi said it could also have more serious applications to make people’s lives safer and easier.

“If the system is mounted on a hearing aid for elderly people, it could tell how often they sneeze or whether they are eating regularly,” he said.

“If it believes they are not well, it could send a warning message to relatives.”

The device could also serve as a remote control for appliances for physically disabled people, from cameras and computers to air conditioners, or alert medical services if a person has a fit, he said.

The Ear Switch follows on from an earlier device called the Temple Switch that was small enough to fit inside a pair of eyeglasses and also read the flick of an eyelid.

“As the ear switch is put in the ears, its optical sensors are unaffected by sunlight,” Taniguchi said.

He said he was planning to patent his new device in Japan and abroad, work on a wireless version, and seek corporate funding to market it for practical uses – something he expected might take two or three years.

BlueAnt X5 Stereo Bluetooth Headset

The good

  • Quite large
  • 3.5mm adaptor for non-Bluetooth devices
  • Easy to use controls

The bad

  • Detachable boom microphone
  • Flat overall sound

Comfort/fit/fashion

BlueAnt’s X5s are large for Bluetooth headphones — although not quite as chunky as the Jabra BT620S — with very comfortable leather-style headphone coverings — this makes them very comfortable to wear, although like the Samsung SBH170, they can tend to feel a little loose around the back of the head — your experience may vary. The BlueAnt logo on the X5s is fairly inconspicuous, although the obvious Bluetooth logo on the side might just make you a mugging target.

Where the X5s stand out from the Bluetooth headphone pack is in the inclusion of a standard 3.5mm audio-jack connector, which lets you use the X5 headset with non-Bluetooth devices.

Sound quality

Sound quality on the X5s was acceptable but never great, with a rather flat overall sound. If you’re listening to just phone audio or compressed music it’s probably less of a concern, but as you can use the supplied adaptor to connect up to better-quality audio sources, it’s worth noting.

Pairing/ease of use

Pairing with the X5s was very simple, with good pickup and a very good range, easily making the Bluetooth standard 10 metres from our testing devices. The simplified controls — which use short and long presses of the volume keys to perform different tasks — are easy to learn and thanks to the Braille-style nodules on them, simple to find for quick adjustment. The microphone, however, is fiddly, as it connects to the USB port on the headset, boom style, and we were constantly worried that we would lose it.
